When a “Line in the Sand” Doesn’t Mean the End
I was talking with a client recently, and he said he had hit one of those life crossroads that can stop you in your tracks. After nearly 40 years of marriage and a long struggle to repair a relationship after infidelity, he told me, “I’m ready to draw a line in the sand.”
Now, we all know that feeling, don’t we? That moment when you think, “I just can’t keep going like this.” For him, that line in the sand felt like it might be the end. But here’s the thing—what if it didn’t have to be?
Turning the Line into a New Path
We kept chatting and I went on to suggest a different approach: in many Indigenous cultures, drawing in the sand has never been just about endings. Sand drawings have been used to tell stories, map out paths, set intentions, and even plan adventures. In that light, a line in the sand doesn’t have to be the end of a story—it can be a plan to create a new one.
Imagine standing at that line and, instead of walking away, stepping forward with curiosity. What if, rather than it resembling a stop sign, that line was the start of a fresh chapter? A way to reset, reflect, and, maybe, move in a direction you didn’t see coming?
A New Perspective on “Endings”
It’s so easy to think of these tough moments as a hard stop. We feel ready to throw up our hands and walk away. But what if this is actually a way of saying, “Here’s a chance to reinvent, to do something that feels more true to you?”
For my client, that line might mean starting over in a new way within his marriage, or it might mean moving forward on his own. Either way, he has the chance to look at this moment as the start of something different, not just the end of something familiar.
Honour the Journey, Then Look Ahead
Of course, none of this is about ignoring what’s happened. When a relationship has been through so much, especially after decades together, it’s worth taking a moment to honour everything that’s led up to now—the good, the struggles, and everything in between. But once you’ve done that, there’s also something incredibly freeing about asking, “What’s next?”
If you’re standing at your own line in the sand, maybe this is a chance to start asking questions. What would life look like if you could let go of the parts that no longer serve you? What kind of relationship, love, or adventure could be waiting just on the other side?
The Start of a New Story
So, to anyone feeling like they’re at the edge of an ending, remember: maybe this is a beginning. Draw your line, and instead of stopping, take a step forward. Let this be the part of your story where you start a fresh adventure—one that’s full of hope, new ideas, and directions you haven’t explored yet.
